They drank from the fountain to stay in touch with the people and the memories of their adolescence. They were the essence of having fun and loving life, the “heart of Saturday night.” On top of spending Saturday nights with your friends, who didn’t love fireworks as a kid? This didn’t occur to me before, but I think the fountains of the fireworks line is Fallon’s fountain of youth. Fallon compares the place and the friends he grew up with to their own version of paradise. The song begins to lay on the nostalgia with the very first verse. (The video cuts off a bit at the end, but it’s one of my favorite performances) With that being said, I think it would be difficult not to fall in love with today’s song and the feeling of nostalgia that it invokes. To the song! The lyrics are incredibly easy to relate to and whisk you back to similar experiences in your own life. One of the recurring themes captured in Gaslight Anthem songs is the ecstasy of youth. To that point, Fallon is also an incredible songwriter.įallon’s songs capture whole moods and feelings, even whole settings, perhaps better than anyone. The look in Fallon’s eyes make it obvious just how much each song means to him, clinging with every word to the feelings and emotions invoked when he first wrote them. The Gaslight Anthem will often intro their own songs with classic soul numbers, and vice versa, seamlessly transitioning from one to the other ( Stand By Me –> I’da Called You Woody, Joe). He is one of the most soulful and passionate performers I have ever seen. In fact, Fallon gives these icons a run for their money. Given his down to earth personality, you could just as easily imagine him singing at an open mic night or a street corner.įor a band classified as punk, Fallon also demonstrates an incredibly high music IQ, referencing jazz and soul figures such as Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, and Miles Davis. Fallon’s gravelly voice belongs on the stage, rather than a studio which may round off some of Fallon’s edginess (nothing against the studio albums). He is constantly interacting with his audience, expressing his gratitude for their support. Brian Fallon is blessed with extraordinary stage presence, injecting funny stories and personal anecdotes within the context of his songs. A live Gaslight Anthem show simply blows its studio performances out of the water. I’m not sure if I’m in the minority here, but to me, you can always tell if a band is great by comparing their live performances to their studio work. The Gaslight Anthem is one of my all time favorite bands. The band is fronted by Brian Fallon, one of the most passionate and humble figures in popular music. He’s just a cool cool guy. Today I wanted to review something by the Gaslight Anthem, a blue collar punk band from New Jersey. Glad to see you’ve stuck with me through my (4 month?) absence from here.
